Xbox One Launch Date Revealed

The Xbox One launch day has finally been released into the wild, and it turns out to be November 22nd, 2013. This is one week after the Playstation 4, which is launching on November 15th, 2013. It was pretty widely speculated that it would release within the span of November, especially after Sony announced their date. This also comes on the heel of the news that they increased the CPU performance of the system, from 1.5 GHZ, to 1.75 GHZ. It isn't a massive increase, but overall helps the processing power, and that the system is finally in full production and the cycle is going as well as planned.

Some release titles for the Xbox One:

  • Dead Rising 3 (exclusive)
  • Forza 5 (exclusive)
  • Ryse: Son of Rome (exclusive)
  • Battlefield 4
  • Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag
  • FIFA 14

E3 Starts Today Part 2 - Ubisoft & Sony

I was going to continue the update from the previous post, but there was a lot of information to put into one post, and I ran out of character space in the labels, so I have started a new post for what I actually got to watch for Ubisoft and Sony's press conferences. You will notice that I will be writing more details for these stories, as I was able to actually watch Sony's conference in full, and about half of the Ubisoft conference.

Ubisoft

I caught their press conference as it was happening, as I just walked in from work, so I'll comment on what I have read and saw.

Rocksmith 2014 - I didn't catch this live, but it seems like an improved edition from the original, with more modes, and better feedback from the guitar to train you on how to actually play guitar. Seems cool if you're into this sort of thing.

Dance Central 2014 - The same game. I honestly really don't care about this one, nor do I know anyone that does. I just know there is a new one coming out.

The Crew - A completely persistent, massive open world racing game that covers the entirety of the United States. I'm not a huge fan of racing games, but the attention to detail, the amount of vehicles and their possibilities, and the humongous open world map have me fully intrigued with this title.

Trials Fusion/Frontier - There will be two new Trials games coming. Fusion will come to all platforms, excluding the PS3. There will be tricks added in for the first time in the series and seems to be set in a more future type setting. This may just be only what they showed in the trailer though. Frontier is an exclusive mobile game for Apple, and Android operating systems

Tom Clancy's: The Divison - In my opinion, this may have stolen the show as far as new games go. It is an RPG co-op shooter set in a post apocalyptic New York, or at least this was the only location they showed. There will be player versus player. You will encounter other survivors as you traverse the maps. Whether they're friendly or hostile is up to you. The attention to detail and the player style customization had me very interested in where this title is going.

Sony

Playstation 3 - Sony started off by showing it's soon to be launched lineup with GTA: V, Last of US, and a couple other games, as well as mentioning their continued support for the system.

Playstation Vita - They had to talk about it, but they announced that the continued support for the Vita will, well, continue. Not a lot of huge info here but heres a quick list:      Counterspy, Destiny of Spirits, Doki Doki Universe, Killzone Mercenery, Tearaway, God of War HD 1 and 2, Final Fantasy X and X-2, Flower, Dead Nation, Transistor, and...

The Walking Dead Season 2 400 days - The second season of the episodic Walking Dead Telltale games are coming, and they will also be available on the Playstation Vita. This was the biggest news for the Vita.

PS4 - They showed the console. They named a price. No confirmed date however. It will retail at $399, and undoubtedly coming this holiday season. They also took some hay maker shots at Microsoft, and stated, the new console will not feature any video game restrictions in the form of trade ins, sharing, or other DRM. However, it has been confirmed now, that you will need Playstation Plus to play games online. As it stands, PS+ is $50. This is a similar model that Microsoft uses, but Sony offers free and discounted games with their service. Applications like Netflix will not be effected if you do not have PS+. You do not need to be connected online to play games either.

Assassin's Creed 4 - More of the same from the AC series, but increased visuals, and less building climbing, and more stealth. There also seemed to be some seamless transition from on foot game play to high seas combat. The demo appeared to be glitching at times as well, which to be honest, seemed almost expected from the game as of late.

The Order: 1886 - A new exclusive IP set on a different timeline where modern weaponry becomes available early on, a group of well dressed soldiers fight what looks like werewolves. I think it would be pretty awesome if it has a Van Helsing-multiple fantasy monster-coop thing going on. It's being made by ReadyAtDawn Studios, the guys behind the handheld PSP God Of War titles.

Indie Games - Sony wanted to make it clear that Indie studios can self publish their own games. I'm just gonna list them:

Don't Starve, Mercenary Kings, Octodad, Secret Ponchos, Ray's the Dead , Oddworld: New n Tasty, Galaxy (17-bit)

Final Fantasy Versus XIII/XV & XIV - In what was possibly the greatest news(only to be rivaled with my next bullet) Square Enix showed Final Fantasy Versus XII, the long awaited game in the "fabula nova crystallis" line set in the Final Fantasy XIII universe. Apparently, it has been in development for PS4 the entire time. It as since been renamed Final Fantasy XV, and it looks absolutely amazing. Also they announced the much maligned revamp of Final Fantasy XIV will be out soon for PS3, and PS4.

Kingdom Hearts 3 - The third game in the beloved Kingdom Hearts series is now in production. A quick trailer showed Sora, voiced by Haley Joel Osmont still, riding Heartless enemies and getting ready for battle. It is not clear whether or not these two Square Enix titles will be console exclusive, but it did appear that way.

Mad Max - I don't know what to make of this. It's a game set in the Mad Max universe, which seems like a cool idea, but why now? I guess it's going to be an open world, car combat, foot combat mash up. I don't know honestly. I'm sure we'll get more info soon.

The Elder Scrolls: Online - The MMO version of the Elder Scrolls will be coming to all next gen consoles, but a trailer was shown at the Sony conference. It will release sometime in 2014.

Destiny - The last bit of Sony's conference, we got hands on game play of Destiny. It looks absolutely stunning, and looks like a mashup of Halo, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2, Borderlands, and a few other games. If you ask me, that's a winning combination of games.

Assassin's Creed III Impressions

Assassins Creed III Impressions

The Assassin’s Creed series has become a cultural icon amongst the gaming community. Whether it has become known as the franchise that started a new revolution, or the possible next victim of the yearly fatigue syndrome, everyone knows it, and has more than likely played at least one. With Assassins Creed III, we step out from the ancient times, to the slightly more recent of the American Revolution.

It’s been a while since the first Assassin’s Creed, 5 years to be exact, and in that time we’ve seen 5 games made. Something I personally didn’t expect out of Ubisoft Studios. I fell in love with Assassin’s Creed, it was a world I’d never travelled to before, a time period rarely even brought up, and a concept relatively unfamiliar to gamers. Travel through an ancient world, scale massive structures, hunt knights of a secret organization, assassinate targets how you saw fit, and attempt to unravel a mystery so deep in its own fiction, they have to warn you at the beginning of the games, it really is fiction. I was hooked. A game that has spawned its own wealth of mimics, some good, more terrible, so you know they’ve been doing something right, an ability to turn a video game into a phenomenal franchise now producing comics, clothing, as well as a movie to come, and more. So 5 games, in about 5 years? Not really what I personally expected.

Assassin’s Creed III is a fun game, huge expanses of frontier, small outpost towns to explore, and cities to explore, a ton of new weaponry, a new protagonist, and more tall buildings and trees to jump off than you can shake your fist at. The story is present, and ever expanding. Learning about Conor, and implementing his Native American ways of life into the Assassin way is a blast. Hearing the authentic Native American dialect is also a treat. Nolan North obviously took a backseat to the role of Conor, seeing how he is late teenager, early adult for the game, and it wasn’t really conducive to production to make him learn the language. But the nothing story wise suffers, if anything it helps propel it forward. The side content is fun, like usual. Collecting Ben Franklin’s Poor Richard’s Almanac pages are fun, snagging feathers is also a challenge, and the naval battles may be my favorite side quest. Manning your own vessel, upgrading the cannons, it’s a great addition to the series. If they give the game the Brotherhood/Revelations treatment, I’d like to see that expanded a little more.

The thing that makes this game suffer is the actual game play itself. While the controls are all virtually the same as the last few entries, I found myself forgetting how to execute certain actions when I set the game down for a few days. Not that that is really anyone’s fault but my own, I just feel like they tried to do so much in the controller mapping, it became somewhat tedious to figure out how to properly shoot your bow and arrow, or catch a Red coat with the tree and trap combo. The thing that plagues the game the most is Conor’s movement. Plenty of times I found myself stuck on a small corner of a roof top with my hands pressed against an imaginary wall like a mime. Countless times I’d push him forward in hopes he’d remember how his legs worked and work up the muscle to take actually step. Plenty of times I’ve also found myself face down on rocks because of Conor’s love for jumping off things, in directions I could swear I didn’t move him in. Horse riding and combat is also pretty noticeably bad. There are certain parts you can full on gallop, as well as parts you can only trot. Which parts are you allowed to do these in? It was never really clear to me. I just found myself trying to chase down red coats in a very boring trot speed chase, while trying to stand on the horse and jump onto his, which is also shoddy at best. The map is also a mess. I don’t know if more is supposed to be unlock as I play, or its fully glitched, but I’m assuming there are no more towers for me to climb, and there are parts of the city still not unlocking, yet I can walk through them with no issues. The custom waypoint also decides to select things on its own, generally in the vicinity of the invisible part of the map.

The game seems to have a lack of guidance. In a game so huge, I just felt like I should’ve been directed a little bit more. Being a fan of the series I understand how things work, what icons mean, and how to obtain new gear, etc. If I was new to the game, I’m pretty sure I would be lost. While it’s clear what the Assassin’s motives are, I felt like I was just doing things to do them. Only a few times so far I have felt like I was really involved. Maybe it’s because of the games bugs that I have lost a little bit of interest in the title, but overall the game is still a lot of fun. The game was in development since shortly after the release of Assassin’s Creed II, but it feels like it needed more play testing, and a bit more polish. I have played a little bit of the multiplayer, but not enough to really comment on.

I can’t deny Assassin’s Creed III’s appeal. It’s a fun game, in a new setting, pushing forward a story they’ve been crafting for a long time. Game play, even with its various issues, is fun and rewarding. For some reason stabbing people in the back, fighting off what sometimes feels like hoards of Red Coats, and reloading muskets don’t seem to get old. I have NOT finished the game, I actually have no idea what point of the story I am into, but if I had to guess, about a third of the way. Based on what I’ve played would I suggest it? Yeah. Maybe not to people who haven’t played the others, the story may be too deep if you haven’t played any of the previous entries. If you have any interest in the series, pick it up. The good definitely outweighs the bad.
